Nutrition
Ceres is the goddess of agriculture; her myth tells us that much of our
food comes from her successful negotiation with Hades, the god of the
underworld. During this negotiation, Ceres' daughter Persephone ate seven
pomegranate seeds, which forever tied her to the nether realms. The message
is clear: what we eat may nourish us or take us to the dark side.
How we nurture ourselves and our children with food depends greatly
upon how we were fed and cared for ourselves.
Most of us know about the five food groups. We're aware that to be
healthy we need to eat a balanced diet, with the right amount of nutrients
and calories for our particular body and lifestyle. Western women can
choose from a bevy of vitamin and mineral supplements as extra insurance.
In fact, in the developed world, more of us are "overnourished" than
underfed.
Women are often responsible for the nutrition of our families as well as
ourselves. Even when we have full-time jobs, the tasks of shopping for
groceries and preparing the meals falls more often on wives than husbands.
In this manner we provide sustenance to those we love.
The moon
rules the emotional nourishment we receive from food when
we eat together as family or friends. Ceres affects the physical side of
food, whether we eat a variety of foods in moderation or try to starve
ourselves into a smaller dress size.
