Spirituality
Women have a very strong need for spirituality. Often, within a couple,
it is the woman who first begins to explore her spiritual side. Class
rosters of groups with a strong spiritual component contain mostly
women's names. As well, a high percentage of the saints and mystics -- whose
devotion and self-sacrifice were legendary -- were women.
We can't box spirituality -- it's very personalized according to our
upbringing and experience. Programs like 12-step recovery work bring a
spiritual aspect to the lives of many people who were not religious before
they committed to the work. Born-again Christians find a sudden
transformation at work in their lives.
Spirituality is within oneself, not outside. We may practice a religion
according to dictates set down outside of ourselves, but even strict
Christian religion tells you to look within.
The soul is part of the subconscious realm of Neptune. Some beliefs
equate the soul to the Holy Spirit of the Christian Trinity.
Where have we been and where are we going?
The history of Western spirituality stems from the ancient gods of Greece
and Rome. The gods were used as metaphors, but ultimately they represented
the One, or different parts of the One. Astrology was born from those Greek
gods. In India, we find a lot of goddesses.
The Karmic wheel refers to life after death and is a concept from Hinduism.
According to this belief, you've got to be good now, because in the next life, you come back better
and complete your journeys more quickly and with less pain.
When we speak of "The Truth," we refer to the truth about what? Whether we
die and go to heaven, the meaning of life? Why do we value something we're
not sure about? Maybe because it gives us hope.
