Worship and Vision
The problems of everyday life lighten when people practice their
spirituality together. Gospel singers in church are really enjoying
themselves, and the joy is contagious. When we listen, the music takes our minds
off our own lives and problems. As well, the very community of a church or religious
group offers support. The physical space in which so many people gather for the same
purpose can create its own ongoing energy. We can just go into a sanctuary where people
regularly worship and feel that energy.
Places of worship have various names: church, mosque, temple, synagogue,
ashram. Indigenous earth-based religions honor sacred places where certain
powers reside and specific ceremonies are carried out.
Some people hope to gain greater vision through a spiritual practice.
Finding a meaningful pattern or direction for your life gives you
perspective and makes life's trials appear as part of a larger whole.
Some indigenous peoples have incorporated vision quests into the
spiritual life cycle. Sometimes these are undertaken only by healers or those
responsible for ceremonies. In other instances, a person might seek a
vision to help pass to a new stage in life or to get information that
will help solve a personal or community problem.
