Technology
Uranus rules technology, but Pallas Athene
personalizes how you integrate it into your life. As the goddess of wisdom and courage, Pallas
Athene influences how quickly you adopt an innovation and how drawn you are to technological advances.
When we think of technology today, we think of high-tech: computers, the Internet,
telecommunications. And when we think of who uses this technology, we often envision the
stereotypical pear-shaped, myopic, 20-something geeky guy. But almost half of Internet users are
women, and the number continues to grow.
Most women who use high-tech products do so in a practical way. We don't
spend hours aimlessly surfing the Web; we find the information we need and
put it to use. Our bookmarks are likely to include FedEx, the Internet Reminder Service, a local
city guide, the Zip Code Finder, the IRS and a dictionary/thesaurus.
Women also tend to be the shoppers
of the family. So we have tremendous influence over the future of the Internet, as
e-commerce becomes the buzzword and the goal of so many companies. While
the movie The Net capitalized on the fear many people still have of
Internet transactions, it did cast a woman -- Sandra Bullock -- as the
computer expert, someone who did most of her shopping over the Net.
Men still dominate the high-tech side of high-tech, as programmers and
technical writers and engineers. But women are rapidly moving into the
technical side as well as developing their expertise in marketing, content
development, admin, and sales. This is one time when
women will
not be left behind while the men tame the new frontier.
Webgrrls, founded in 1995, is an example of how women are making the Web work for us. Webgrrls
unites women all over the globe, providing a community forum and networking opportunitites to women
who work in the high-tech industry or who are just getting started with their first modems. Many
other women's online communities have appeared as well, a fitting tribute to our ability to make
technology our own: Amazon City, the Women's Online Community Network, and Women's Connection
Online are just a few.
